Caring for your jewellery for a lifetime
Your rings are a special piece of jewellery, made with care and designed to be worn and cherished for many years to come. We know you'll want to wear it every day, and with proper care habits, it will continue to look lovely and stay secure.
This guide follows the care recommendations of the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), of which London Victorian Ring Co. is a proud member. These are recognised industry standards for jewellery care, ensuring you receive professional guidance to maintain your ring.
Daily Care – When to Remove Your Ring
At Home: We recommend removing your ring before you go to sleep—it's more comfortable for you and protects your ring from damage during movement. When you're washing up, especially with heavy pots and pans, it's recommended to remove your ring to keep it safe. The same goes for cleaning around the house or when you're applying hand cream or perfume.
Exercise and Activities: Remove your ring when you're at the gym or doing sports. Exercise equipment and weights can damage gemstones or bend bands. Swimming is another time to remove your rings, especially in chlorinated pools which can affect precious metals.
Garden and DIY: When you're gardening or doing any hands-on work around the house, your ring is much safer stored away. Even gentle gardening can be tough on jewellery settings and stones.
Why Removing Your Ring Helps: Your ring contains precious metals and gemstones that, while durable, benefit from thoughtful care. What might seem like everyday activities can gradually affect the setting or the metal over time. Taking a moment to remove your ring during these activities will help keep everything secure and looking its best.
Gentle Cleaning at Home
For Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby & Aquamarine Rings: Fill a small bowl with warm water and add just a drop of washing-up liquid. Let your ring soak gently for a few minutes, then use a soft toothbrush to carefully clean around the setting—this is where everyday buildup accumulates. Rinse with clean water, being mindful to block up the sinkhole, and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Special Care for Emerald Rings: Emeralds need extra gentle treatment. Give them just a quick clean in warm, soapy water (no extended soaking), clean very gently with a baby toothbrush, then rinse and dry immediately. Never use ultrasonic cleaners on emerald jewellery as this can cause damage. Please note, emeralds can dry out, so it is essential to look after them carefully and not expose them to high cleaning chemicals or extreme heat, such as a sauna.
How Often: Whenever you notice it's lost some of its sparkle.
Safe Storage
Daily Storage: When you remove your ring, place it somewhere safe—your original ring box is perfect, or use a jewellery dish. Bathroom counters and kitchen surfaces aren't ideal as your ring could easily be knocked or forgotten.
Overnight: Always remove your ring before sleep and store it safely. You'll sleep more comfortably, and your ring will be protected from any movement during the night.
When Travelling: Your original ring box is ideal for travel, or use a padded jewellery case. Never wrap it in tissue or leave it loose in luggage where it could be damaged.
